About Slieve League and Bunglas Heritage Area

Located on the rugged Atlantic coastline of County Donegal, Ireland, the Slieve League and Bunglas Heritage Area is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, which soar up to 601 meters (1,972 feet) above sea level, ranking among the tallest sea cliffs in Europe. The area encompasses the Slieve League cliffs themselves alongside the nearby Bunglas peninsula, offering a stunning blend of natural beauty and cultural history. The landscape boasts a mixture of steep sea cliffs, heath-covered hills, and coastal grasslands, supporting seabird colonies including puffins, razorbills, and fulmars. The heritage area preserves traditional rural communities whose historical ties date back centuries, reflecting a rich Gaelic cultural legacy through language, crafts, and farming practices.

Visitors can enjoy a number of well-marked trails suited to a variety of fitness levels, with the most famous being the Slieve League Cliffs walk which provides panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and offers opportunities for spotting dolphins and basking sharks offshore. The heritage area also supports fishing villages, archaeological sites including ancient forts and Early Christian sites, and seasonal wildflower blooms that color the coastal meadows. With mild maritime weather, the area is accessible year-round though summer months provide the best conditions for hiking and wildlife viewing.
